mixd.tv and social

written by mixdtv, on Oct 11, 2011 9:34:00 AM.

Yesterday, GigaOM NewTeeVee contributor Janko Roetgers wrote an article about us: "Makers of Mixd.tv app believe social is overrated". As well as saying thank you to Janko, we'd like to give a little more background information about mixd.tv and social.

In a world that is being blown away by Social Networking, the sizes of these networks and the company valuations that go with it, it is easy to get carried away and to want a slice of the cake... Before we start, lets get one thing straight: Social Networks are a great thing and, no doubt, have changed the internet forever, they are here to stay and will generate huge value for all sorts of services. So, I hear you all asking, why do we feel that social is over-hyped in the world of video?

What do we mean by social?

The hot topic of the moment and the context of our discussion: Social Recommendations based on Facebook's social graph. This topic is so complex, that it's impossible to write about all the benefits and possible down sides in one small post, so lets look at this from the perspective of which actions/pieces of information build our social graph.

What do you "like"?

Facebook has done a great job of spreading the "like" (now increasingly the "verb") across the web and they have tried to build up our profiles by encouraging people to list their interests (favorite movies, music, books etc...) but just how many people would be happy with the resulting picture that is drawn? Does Facebook understand sarcasm? Does Facebook fill the gaps if you can't really be bothered to seriously build up your profile? ... and we've all seen the jokes about how a person is perceived on Facebook and who that person is in real life!

How many "Friends" do you have?

When looking at the numbers of friends people have on facebook, it becomes clear that the term "friend" no longer has the meaning that it used to... Would you describe your colleagues as "friends"? Would you describe the class mates who would annoy you when you were 13 as "friends"? Would you describe your parents or grandparents as "friends"? In short, NO... and although Social Networks are working on this, there is still a long way to go.

How inclined are we to share?

Increasingly, people are aware that the squeeky wheel gets the grease, yet we often forget that trends are mostly biased. For example, the chances that the top trending YouTube video is something truly interesting to the wide public are pretty slim... OK, so this doesn't take into account any personalisation and, clearly, User Generated content should not be treated the same way as TV content or Journalistic content. The point is that sharing is often about strong opinions - Amen! - and it's unclear whether an individual really wants to share his/her opinions or if they want to see the video clips about political parties, causes or lifestyle choices that others feel strongly enough about to share.

In summary, Facebook's social graph is going to be patchy at best, in terms of painting a picture of our web-selves - it should probably be likened to a, more or less, unfinished jigsaw... Also, while I (the user) may be interested in browsing over what is being shared in my network, just as we are often attracted to read those trashy magazines over the shoulders of passengers in commuter-trains, it does not mean that I see value in those things being shared. mixd.tv believes that being a service that automatically tells everyone what I'm doing, or that being a service that serves me the product based on what the squeeky wheels are saying, is a step too far, mixd.tv gives you the option to be social, but is not defined by social.

So will mixd.tv never have recommendations?

Never say never! Perhaps we will one day see our mixd.tv Facebook channel with recommendations based on our Facebook network, we might also see mixd.tv Movie recommendations based on Tweets and other real time information or News/Documentaries based on our LinkedIn network... but for the moment, mixd.tv has a lot of work to make consuming video from all over the web easier, helping people get the latest content that interests them - not their "friends", followers or others.

So lets close this post and make another thing clear: Yes - we did say that (in this context) social is overrated! And Yes - we stand by that!

Social will have its day in the world(s) of video, but much like the internet in the 90s, there are more pressing things to take care of first.

Thanks for reading and please feel free to share - or not ;)

mixd.tv anytime anywhere...

written by mixdtv, on Oct 10, 2011 4:13:00 PM.

Another release is out for you to play with. This time the big change is regarding logging in! You can now opt to remain logged in on a computer, so that you can access mixd.tv even if there is no network connectivity (normal user authentication requires a connection).

This is not a real offline solution - yet! - however, given that favorites are downloaded when possible and given our pre-buffering quicklist solution (video is buffered as soon as it is dropped into the quicklist), there is now a way for you all to catch up on those clips at a time that is more convenient for you. Also, to give an overview of the buffering status on each video, one of our engineers had the great idea of adding a progress bar at the bottom of video thumbnails, so now you can close your laptop once you know that your quicklist is buffered and watch video from anywhere, even without a connection.

Enjoy, the release!

Beta 1.0.1 Update

written by mixdtv, on Sep 14, 2011 2:08:00 PM.

If you login to your mixd.tv app today, you will notice a small notification that there is an update available for you... This is one of our updates that we expect to roll out regularly, improving mixd.tv so that you have a better experience and so that any problems you report to us are fixed.

This release brings in some great little improvements:
  • When watching a channel, videos will play through one after the other as before, except now... the display will not dim, so just sit back and watch!
  • If the channel that you are trying to watch times out because the requests to the website fail or the network is patchy, you can now reload channels directly from the UI.
  • If all fails and you are sure that the channel is just broken or if you think the content should be different, we now have a way for you to let us know – directly from the channel! You can add a comment after clicking report to let us know exactly what the problem is.
  • Notifications about new videos have been improved too. In our last release, we found that some videos were being counted multiple times, so you might be told that there were 36 new videos on the Facebook channel, when in fact there were only 18.
  • Forgot your password? No problem! If you have a mixd.tv username and password and you have forgotten this, you can now request an e-mail for a temporary password. The e-mail will also include your username, just in case ;)
  • If you have a temporary password and want to change it back to something more memorable, you can now change your password from the settings page.
That’s it for this release. We hope that you are enjoying watching video from all over the web with mixd.tv!

Notifications Galore!

written by mixdtv, on Sep 7, 2011 2:23:00 PM.

Subscriptions are a central part of the mixd.tv application. If you are following playlists and channels you will receive notifications about all the new videos that are added to those items... though, since our release we have noticed that a few of our optimisations are not as optimal as we thought...

Our notifications will be fixed in the coming weeks!

So that you know exactly how many new videos there are for you to watch in a channel, we are going to make sure that our update makes the number in the notifications reflect the REAL number of new videos.

Also, we are always open to suggestions for great channels of content, so please let us know if you have any favorite YouTube/Vimeo/Other channels of content that we can add for you – we would be more than happy to get a few extra video sources in per release, so that you always get notified when there is something new for you.

A few interesting channels to look out for:

  • Facebook
  • The Facebook channel is the easiest way to just sit back and see what is being shared in your network. Many videos are lost in your news feed and some are not visible because friends of friends posted them on your friends walls... Not with mixd.tv, we show you all the things that are shared by and with your friends.

  • Tagesschau, Tagesschau 20H
  • If you want to keep up to date with the daily news in German, this is one for you!

  • Vimeo, Vimeo Staff Picks
  • Some of the best short videos and animations from the network (mainly English), Vimeo is know for quality all around – find academic creations as well as well as privately financed films and animations here.

  • MUZU.TV
  • For those who like music, MUZU.TV is a European project that aims to bring Music Videos to the masses. These channels (created by Genre) are great if you have a party and a projector, just click play and let mixd.tv do the rest!

  • Arte+7, Dokumentationen
  • If a good documentary is your kind of thing, then Arte has some great stuff! This channel is currently only available in German.

  • TWiT, This Week in Tech
  • A roundtable discussing the tech news of the week with Leo Laporte and Friends. Having just moved into an expensive new Studio, TWiT are now creating some of the highest quality material that can be found on the Web.

  • revision3, Foundation
  • An interview program hosted by Kevin Rose, the Founder of digg.com, topics range from Founding Internet Startups to operating tee houses.

  • revision3, Tom's Top 5
  • Ashort weekly show where host Tom Merritt presents a top 5 list of interesting gadgets or tech topics.

  • This Week in, This Week in Startups
  • A weekly program discussing how to practically build internet startups with Jason Calacanis and Guest Entrepreneurs.

  • YouTube, Autos and Vehicles, Top Gear
  • For those looking for something a little more light-hearted... Top Gear is THE car program – their crazy challenges and fun games are enough to get everyone interested, I mean who wouldn’t want to see what happens when you try to construct yourself a multi-storey caravan? Expect fire and destruction!
Of course, there are many more channels just waiting to be discovered...

Over and out from mixd.tv!

The re-release - We're getting Beta!

written by mixdtv, on Aug 23, 2011 6:16:00 PM.

Today we launch the revamped mixd.tv App – Beta 1.0. We’d like to thank all the patient people who have waited to see this happen and hope that you all agree with us that we now have a solid base to build on.

Since late last year, our small team has spent many many hours working with our fabulous designer (who in that time has become a full time mum – congrats to that!) to come up with a simpler, cleaner and more professional look, so that you can enjoy watching video in style and with ease. We still have lots of ideas of what more we can do, but we think that it’s time to let people in – and more importantly hear what you have to say!

Our major new “features” include the integration of Facebook, for those of you who don’t want to miss the videos that are being shared in your network, a quicklist area for adding videos from search results, channels or playlists that you casually browse, so that you can watch them later and the “fav star”, so that you can keep a link to your favorite videos - even if their owners disapprove of them being downloaded. The user experience is totally different to what it used to be – we’ve tried to apply the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid), though we’re sure that you, our Beta Users, will help us find those obvious things that we missed!

On the content side, we still have quite a lot of German content – particularly when it comes to the broadcasters. As we are based in Berlin, German content providers are (hopefully) the guys who will help us launch. Working together with content providers, our aim is maintain partner revenue streams and become ‘THE’ app to give you users an optimal way of consuming their video. If you do own a great website with video content that you believe would make a perfect channel, then get in touch – we are always happy to talk to people about the features we can implement to make their channels work on our platform!

For the future we are working on many new and exciting ideas, however, we still have some big “under the hood” changes that will improve the performance and stability of the application. Not wanting to be boring… we do have a big target before next year and that is: making it easy for you – the users and owners of video communities - to create your own channels and present them to the community!!! So watch this space :-)

An article about Nokia's Qt GUI-library within mixd.tv

written by mixdtv, on Sep 15, 2010 3:30:00 PM.

In the article, “Unifying Users' Web TV Experiences Via Social Media with Qt Quick”, recently published on Nokia's Qt Blog, we explain why we chose Qt as a user interface (UI) environment for mixd.tv and how it is helping us to build a state-of-the-art internet video service.

As a cross-platform library, Qt is available for Windows, Linux X11, Mac OS X and even some PDAs. The posting gives you an idea about how smoothly the implementation of Qt works out for mixd.tv.

YouTube v.s. mixd.tv on OSX

written by mixdtv, on Jul 1, 2010 4:07:00 PM.

We've just entered the test phase for the mixd.tv Mac OSX app. As it turns out the mixd.tv app is already faster than YouTube's flash player (with our video player not yet fully optimized). In the screencast below you see the same 1080p video (scaled down by the players) as it is running in Safari and then playing in mixd.tv's mplayer.

The frame rate in the mixd.tv app is way higher than in YouTube's flash player. Filmed from a MacMini (1.83 GHz) on OSX Version 10.5.8.
